Focus on creating inter-junction and better road signage: Yudhir Singh Malik, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

We should focus on creating proper inter-junctions, road signage and furniture rather than increasing road length asserted the Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways – Yudhvir Singh Malik. The secretary was speaking at ASSOCHAM’s 3rd Conference on Safe Road – Safe Life in New Delhi.  He was also hopeful of the successful passage of the amended Motor Vehicle Bill in the next Parliamentary session. However self-inculcated discipline is the ultimate solution for reducing road accidents, he added, 

Sr. Research Officer - G.C.S, NITI Aayog – Amit Bhardwaj presented the government’s perspective at the conference. India loses 3% of its GDP every year to road accidents he observed. Mr. Bhardwaj also listed some steps that the government is taking to ensure safer roads in India. 

The keynote address on the occasion was delivered by the Vice President, Corporate Planning and Govt. Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India Limited – Rahul Bharti who spoke of the role technology can play in improving both compliance and enforcement of rules. The most important thing for auto-makers is to ensure that their products are safe, he noted.

The conference also included technical discussions and presentations on themes such as Road safety – related Sustainable Development Goals and Targets and the role of stakeholders.
