The govt may reduce GST rates for handicrafts soon stated the DC, Handicrafts - Shantmanu as he spoke to the media on the sidelines of the National Conference and Awards on Women in Textiles and Handicrafts Industry: Weaving the Threads of Livelihood in New Delhi. Though most of the artisans involved in handicrafts are liable to pay GST, the sector has still faced problems due to a rise in input costs. The government is cognizant of their problems he asserted. He also mentioned how Indian has signed MoUs with other countries for the promotion of Indian Handicrafts and the interest shown by several entrepreneurs of Indian origin in Indian handicraft industry. Though the sector is still stagnant exports of carpets and handicrafts are rising he added. Mr. Shantmanu added that the government has taken steps to ensure high quality of Indian handicrafts specifically the launching of the Indian Handloom Brand.
